Upper School Program Overview

True Partnership Christian Academy offers a college-preparatory curriculum. After all, 99% of our graduates will attend a 4-year college or university, therefore, the emphasis is not only on teaching content, but also on developing lifelong learners who are skilled at reading, writing, and reasoning.  Honors and AP courses are offered in several subjects.

Teaching methods in the Upper School incorporate oral presentations, drama, papers, speeches, worldview discussion, technology, and guided research with the goal of incorporating ideas which will eventually lead to the composition and defense of the senior thesis.

In addition to a rigorous academic curriculum, TPCA is supported by the four pillars of our education: Biblical Studies, International Studies, Performing Arts, and STEM enrichment. TPCA offers its students the opportunity to mature in character and develop the gift of service through an extensive chapel program, educational occupancy (internship) in K-12 classes, peer tutoring, and extra-curricular opportunities.

Educational Occupancy: This selective program is for sophomore, juniors, and seniors who have an interest in teaching or have demonstrated excellence in a subject. Interns are partnered with a teacher in the lower and upper school, assisting in regular routines, observing lessons, and presenting limited lessons to the class.

Senior Thesis: Senior compose a 15-20-page comprehensive worldview thesis which concludes in an oral defense before a formal panel of faculty and administrators. A passing grade of a 75 (C) or above must be earned for credit.

Upper School Courses

The Upper School offers a wealth of courses in its catalog across all major subject areas including, business, technology as well as foundational courses such as mathematics, science, engineering, language arts, and many more. While most of our classes are taught face-to-face, we now offer online courses for advanced subjects and unique elective courses.

As a way to address the many different learning styles of our students, we offer three different kinds of courses. They are Academic Honors (AP), AES and Modified Courses.

Academic Honors Courses – Honors classes are designed for students who have mastered prerequisite knowledge and skills, allowing students in the class to follow a faster pace for instruction and more in-depth coverage of the Skills for that course. Courses are offered in Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Modern Languages. Teacher recommendation required.

AES – Academic Enrichment Services provides students of all ages with supplemental assignments and individual tutoring to achieve mastery in the desired content areas. AES assesses students to gain individual performance levels and learning styles, enabling us to teach directly to the specific needs and educational goals.  AES offers the following services: Early Intervention Reading Programs (Grades K-3); Reading Instruction (Grades 4+); Writing Skills; Math; IEP Consultation & Support / Instruction for Special Needs Children.   All services are customized to each student’s specific needs.

Modified courses (M) – The decision to enroll a student in a Locally Modified Course should be based on assessment and evaluation of the student’s academic functioning, educational history of the student, and the agreement and input of students and parents/caregivers, teachers and administrators.

Testing/SAT/ACT Prep – sub-navigation drop down from Academics

SAT test- All students from 7th to 12th grade are required to take the SAT. Our eligible 7th grade students take the SAT through the Duke University TIP’s 7th grade Talent Search program. Grade levels 8th through 10th see great benefits from our required SAT program. College-bound juniors and seniors are well aware that their SAT test scores will play an important role in their college applications. The higher the score, the greater the chances of being accepted to the best colleges. Taking the SAT early and often also provides several benefits: lots of practice, improved test scores, and less test anxiety

Duke TIP’s 7th Grade Talent Search helps academically talented students identify their strengths, develop their abilities and interests, and celebrate their achievements at a crucial time when they are forming their identities and looking ahead to the future. Participants learn about their strengths with an above-level test (either the ACT or SAT) and receive benefits like specialized publications and resources, educational guidance, recognition of their abilities, and academic challenges. Enrolling in the 7th Grade Talent Search is also the first step to attending TIP’s renowned online and face-to-face educational programs.

TPCA offers an SAT/ACT institutionalized preparation program.  Our SAT/ACT test prep program takes the guesswork out of test-taking for our students while providing score-raising preparation to students who might not otherwise prepare.

While many test prep programs try teaching the content of the SAT or ACT (which is learned in school), It is most important to learn the strategy of the test itself. TPCA knows it is impossible for students to learn and memorize every single answer to every question that could possibly be on the SAT or the ACT.  Therefore, we teach students how to know the strategy behind each question. Strategizing is a major part of any good test prep program. The student will better understand how to apply logic and reason.

Standardized Test: TPCA administers the TerraNova Third Edition Achievement Test in grades 1-11. This assessment is published by CTB/McGraw-Hill, and, through its partnership with Associated Christian School International, is being made available to Christian schools across the nation and around the globe.  Be assured that the TerraNova 3 is a technically sound and up-to-date assessment program and provides the most recent national comparisons. Out of the three major national achievement tests available, the TerraNova 3 is used by 42% of the schools testing in the United States, which is a conclusive majority of the testing demographic.

TerraNova 3 is designed to measure concepts, processes, and objectives taught throughout the nation in Reading, Bible, Language, Vocabulary, Spelling, Word Analysis, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, in addition to the “In-View” test which is a measure of a student’s projected ability.
